My WordPress site was hacked — how to clean and secure it

22 Sep 2026 · 6 min read

Redirects to spam, injected pharma text, a defaced homepage, or Google flagging your site — these are symptoms. A proper cleanup fixes the root cause, not just the visible mess.

Why sites get reinfected

Most reinfections come from a leftover backdoor, an outdated plugin/theme, weak admin credentials, or shared-hosting cross-contamination. Deleting the visible malware without closing the hole just resets the clock.

A proper cleanup

  1. Take a backup, then scan core, plugins, themes and the database for injected code and backdoors.
  2. Replace core/plugins/themes with known-good versions; remove abandoned ones.
  3. Rotate all credentials and secret keys; review users and scheduled tasks.
  4. Clean blocklisting with Google Safe Browsing and reputation vendors.
  5. Harden: least-privilege, a WAF, file-integrity monitoring and updates.

We clean and harden sites you own or administer, and find the root cause so it stays clean.

You don't have to deal with this alone.
